Food! Everyone’s Favorite Subject!
Whether you are picking up some fresh bread from the local bakery (of which there are many!) or sitting down for a magical diner at Pelegrini (in Šibenik), you’ll love the food of Croatia!
The Coast is Seafood Heaven
When you visit the Adriatic coast of Croatia you’ll find beautiful seafood options around every corner! We highly recommend trying as much as you can, but don’t forget to get Blitva as a side too! Blitva (on the far right in the picture above) is a potato and Swiss chard dish that is fantastic! So simple, yet so tasty and goes perfectly with seafood and meat dishes alike!
Italian Influences Abound Too! Fresh pasta with rabbit so succulent you’ll forget to take the pictures until the meal is half over!
For some of the best meals you’ll have to get a little adventurous! The countryside is full of hidden gems with incredible food. What’s little know is that practically everyone in Croatia’s small towns and villages is making their own sausages, rakija (a brandy typically made from plums, but there are infinite varieties including a sweat walnut that must be sought out!), and probably know a person making cheeses, have cousins raising pigs, sheep, or cows and/or know a butcher. Fresh fruits and vegetables can always be had at local markets or found on the sides of country roads where folks sell what they grow. Often you eat cherries, apples, figs and plums straight from the tree, as everyone plants fruit trees in their yards! It’s all fresh! It’s all local! It’s incredible!
Beautiful dining from the porch of an eatery in a small town off the beaten path in Istria. Wine is always plentiful!
Fine dining is plentiful too! Have you ever had an amazing meal and talked it up for years to everyone you know; then gone back years later knowing that you’ve built it up in your mind so much that there is no way it can live up to your expectations? We have and that place is Pelegrini in Šibenik. But not only did it meet these lofty expectations, it topped them the second time! It’s an incredible place! We cannot recommend it highly enough! It is worth every penny (which is will cost you quite a few)!
The view from Pelegrini’s large courtyard outdoor dining! St. Jacob's Cathedral is to the left and, if you’re lucky, the choir may have practice and fill the air with magic!
Evey bite is magical! Just sit back and let them keep bringing you food! 10-12 courses over 3+ hours! It’s an experience like no other! Get the wine pairings and you’ll have world class wines that Pelegrini has partnered with Dalmatia’s incredible wineries to produce!
This beef simply melts in your mouth! And don’t think there isn’t a surprise under there! Words fail, it’s that good! The menu changes regularly. Whatever you my be presented with will be amazing and we envy you, because we want to try it all!
While yachts dock in Šibenik to have dinner at Pelegrini, the amazing bakeries are a daily experience with fresh bread, burek and other tasty delights! The bread in Croatia is amazing! It’s made every day without fail and nothing beats the taste of a simple loaf of fresh bread!
Bakeries can get busy in the mornings, but lines are not typically too long and well worth the wait! Loaf of bread is less than 2 euro!
It may not look like much, but Burek is a national treasure and MUST be at least tried! You’ll be hooked! We eat it nearly every morning! Meat or Cheese are the traditional savory options, but you’ll find spinach quite regularly and some sweet options too.
That’s all for now! We’ll continue next week where the focus will be MEAT!
